You will NEVER be an influencer: dismantling digital meritocracy at the UMH Library

16 October 2025

Next Wednesday, 29 October 2025, at 5:00 p.m., the Miguel Hernández University Library (Elche Campus) will host the lecture “NUNCA serás Influencer: desmontando la meritocracia digital”, given by writer and professor Juan Ferrete. Admission will be free until full capacity is reached.

A critical look at influencer culture.

Social media has generated a growing aspiration among young people: to become an influencer as a synonym for personal success. However, this idealised narrative, driven by the algorithms of digital platforms, hides less visible realities such as self-exploitation, frustration and constant comparison with lives far removed from everyday reality.
This talk will analyse the idealised myths portrayed on social media, the consequences for content creators, and alternatives for rebelling against platforms that exploit users’ dreams for their own benefit.

The importance of critical thinking.
The activity aims to provide the university community with tools to question digital myths and reflect on how they affect identity construction. For the speaker, ‘instead of democratising access to fame and money, what has really been democratised are false illusions.’
In this way, the UMH Library reaffirms itself as a space for dialogue and knowledge, promoting analysis of the social and cultural challenges posed by the digital age.
